Apartment installation

Starlink installation in an apartment

Most Starlink buyers in Iran live in apartments, and the real question is where the dish sits. The terminal needs open sky. A balcony, terrace, or roof provides it. A room behind coated glass or a metal screen does not. StarPing sells four kits. For a flat, three choices matter: Mini $249, Mini X $299, and the Home Kit $349 when the roof is available.

The connection subscription is free across Iran; no subscription payment is needed to use the equipment in Iran. Monthly plans are only needed for use outside Iran.

What changes the decision in an apartment

Sky view, not the floor number

The dish talks to satellites overhead. A balcony that sees a wide patch of sky works. A narrow courtyard, a covered balcony, or a window facing a taller building next door does not. Check that exact spot with the Starlink app obstruction tool before you drill anything.

Glass and metal screens

The dish sits outside the glass: balcony floor, terrace edge, or roof. Coated double glazing and a metal insect screen close the path. A window is a mounting spot only when the app shows no obstruction in that frame. There is no indoor-only kit.

Mini or Mini X inside the flat

The dish is the same and both sit on the same balcony. The $50 difference is the router: Mini at $249 has Wi-Fi in the body and fits one or two people. Mini X at $299 adds a separate Wi-Fi 6 router for rooms away from the balcony and for several devices at once.

The Home Kit only with a roof or terrace

The Standard 4 Home Kit, $349, is a full-size dish for a fixed install. If the building does not allow the roof and the terrace has no wide view, do not buy the Home Kit for a north-facing window. The flat kit is Mini or Mini X.

Speed and latency

Ranges printed on StarPing kit cards: 25–100 Mbps for Mini and the Travel Kit, 50–120 Mbps for Mini X, and 100–300 Mbps for the Home Kit. Floor number does not move that range. Sky view does. Latency is higher than city fiber because the signal goes to orbit and back. Video calls and streaming run with a clear view. No ping figure is published; each kit's range is on the speed guide. A monthly gaming plan is not required inside Iran.

From the balcony to a live connection

  1. 1. Check the spot in the app

Open the Starlink app on the balcony, terrace, or window where the dish will stay. If it shows an obstruction, find another spot in the same flat. Tie the purchase to that check.

  2. 2. Match the kit to the building

No roof: Mini at $249 for one or two people, or Mini X at $299 when several devices stay online. A roof or an open terrace: the Home Kit at $349 for a family at a fixed address.

  3. 3. Order the hardware only

The price on the page is the kit price. Do not add a monthly plan for use inside Iran. The connection subscription is free across Iran and activates after residency and the kit serial are confirmed.

  4. 4. Place the dish outside the glass and create the network

Mini powers on from the kickstand on a flat balcony surface with open sky. The 15 m power cable reaches inside the flat. Create Wi-Fi in the app and submit the serial on StarPing order tracking.

Frequently asked questions

Does Starlink work behind an apartment window?
Only when the Starlink app shows no obstruction in that frame. Coated glass and a metal screen close the path to the satellites. The reliable spot is outside the glass, on a balcony or terrace.
Should an apartment buy Mini or the Home Kit?
Without roof access, Mini at $249. If the rooms are far from the balcony or many devices stay online, Mini X at $299. Buy the Home Kit at $349 when the flat itself can use a roof or a terrace with a wide view.
Is a small balcony enough?
If the kickstand fits and the app obstruction tool shows that spot clear, balcony size is not the decision. Sky view is.
Does an apartment need its own monthly subscription?
No. The connection subscription is free across Iran, in a flat or a villa. A monthly plan is only for use outside Iran.
Is apartment speed different from a house?
The difference does not come from the floor. It comes from sky view and dish size. Mini is 25–100 Mbps, Mini X is 50–120 Mbps, and the Home Kit is 100–300 Mbps on that kit's card.
